H2Boat Solutions Oy
Transforming Maritime Innovation with Hydrogen-Powered Boats
We develop zero-emission autonomous pilot-ready solutions for last-mile maritime logistics by small commercial boats in the Nordics
We are seasoned international entrepreneurs from Helsinki, Finland. Here is our founding story.
In the spring of 2019, at a business event in Helsinki, we met and realized we shared a vision for a cleaner, more sustainable maritime future. Both immigrants and mature entrepreneurs, we had founded numerous startups and managed global companies.

Alan's Startup Journey
Alan has an international mindset, lived in Silicon Valley, and has over a decade of experience in international startup development. He launched his startup from scratch, raised $MM, expanded to the international markets, and successfully exited. As an alumnus of top accelerators like 500 Startups and StartupSauna, and with an Executive MBA, Alan brought strategic insight and business acumen to our venture.

Tony's Innovation
Tony, an inventor and engineer, brought more than 20 years of experience in electric vehicles and over 10 years in autonomous driving and hydrogen technologies. He founded EvoCargo, a $6 billion company, and co-founded the Non-Profit Engineering School AurinkoLab in Espoo. His technical expertise and innovative spirit are key to our mission.

A Shared Vision
Our meeting in Helsinki was more than a coincidence; it was the perfect convergence of strategic and technical expertise. With Alan's business development skills and Tony's technical prowess, we aimed to tackle the environmental impact of maritime logistics. Together, we envisioned zero-emission hydrogen-powered solutions for small commercial boats in the Nordics.

Building the Future
Our combined strengths are driving the development of sustainable maritime logistics. Our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability is set to transform the industry, making it cleaner and more efficient for future generations.

Why Hydrogen-Powered Boats
Hydrogen-powered boats offer several benefits, making them a promising alternative to traditional internal combustion engines and even battery electric boats in certain contexts. Here are the main advantages:
  • Zero Emissions:
Environmental Impact: Hydrogen-powered boats emit only water vapor and heat as byproducts. This means they produce no tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), or particulate matter, which significantly reduces their impact on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Fast Refueling:
Convenience: Refueling a hydrogen boat typically takes about 3-5 minutes, similar to refueling a gasoline or diesel boat. This is much faster compared to the time required to charge a battery electric boat (BEB), especially when using standard charging infrastructure.
  • High Energy Density:
Range and Weight: Hydrogen has a higher energy density compared to batteries. This means hydrogen fuel cells can store more energy per unit of weight, allowing for longer cruising ranges without significantly increasing the boat's weight. This makes hydrogen particularly advantageous for heavy-duty applications like commercial boats, ferries, and even larger vessels.
  • Scalability and Flexibility:
Applications: Hydrogen can be produced from various resources, including natural gas, water (via electrolysis), and biomass. This versatility allows for a wide range of production methods, potentially utilizing renewable energy sources. Moreover, hydrogen can be used not only in fuel cell boats but also in various industrial processes, energy storage systems, and as a fuel for heating.
  • Energy Resilience and Independence:
Diversification: By incorporating hydrogen into the energy mix, countries can diversify their energy sources, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. This can enhance energy security and resilience, particularly in the face of geopolitical instability or supply chain disruptions.
